KENDRICK: “WE JUST HAVE TO BEAT OURSELVES.”
Three-time West Australian Sprintcar Champion Jason Kendrick has returned to impressive form with three wins from four events so far this season and goes into the Speedway Australia sponsored WA States Series Speedweek as the hot favourite from Boxing Day.
The TripleM 92.9 KPC pilot will have to wrestle the title from defending champion Callum Williamson, however “we just have to beat ourselves” is Kendrick’s nonchalant response to any rival’s challenge.
“We don’t really think about anyone else. The only person we need to beat is ourselves. People try and beat the other driver or the other car or the track, but we just concentrate on our own game. My thought process is that if we do our best we will win. Simple.”
His return to form has silenced critics who enjoyed seeing the 32-year-old have a somewhat quiet season in 2020-21 with only two wins, but Kendrick is confident that the bad luck of the previous calendar is behind him.
“Last season was strange. We had some bad luck which sounds like a bad cliché, but we also had some confusing nights where I think I wasn’t reporting back to Dad (Geoff) and Brett (Sartori) very accurately. Dad was developing the engine and it was really quick but it was responding differently to what I was used to, so I’d come back to the team to give them feedback on what the car was doing so they’d make changes, but looking back it was more likely the power delivery was different and I just wasn’t reporting accurately.”Kendrick will join 19 other drivers including Shaun Bradford, David Priolo, Callum Williamson, Daniel Harding and Dayne Kingshott on AAA Metal Recycling Boxing Day and then share the program with 75 winged Sprintcars on the following Tuesday night for the Merger Contracting Sprintcar Muster.
Then after a few days break, the series continues at the Motorplex for a January 1 and 2 double header before heading to Ellenbrook on January 8 and returning to the Motorplex for the Grand Final on January 15.
The Perth Motorplex events will be streamed live on DirtVision.
